Background

Since 1987, BPW Franklin has presented a one-off cash Study Award to assist a woman with connections to the Franklin community striving to build on their potential. The 2025 recipient will be a woman who has connections with Franklin or is a past or present resident of the Franklin area, and who is undertaking a course at a recognised University, Polytechnic or College of Education in New Zealand or retraining following an absence from employment.

The bursary is awarded to the woman who best shows she has achieved and is continuing to achieve in her chosen study and/or career, who shows she needs this monetary support to continue her studies, who contributes to her community through service such as volunteering to community groups (which does not necessarily have to be related to the course of study) and who has the personality to represent BPW Franklin and its ideals.

Eligibility

This Study Award will be presented to a woman who is undertaking a course at a recognised University, Polytechnic or College of Education in New Zealand or retraining following an absence from employment or could be following a career change.

The applicant will be a woman who has connections with Franklin or is a past or present resident of the Franklin area. Franklin is the area formerly Franklin District Council prior to Council boundary changes in 2010.

The applicant must demonstrate their NZ residence status, whether born in New Zealand or not. A copy of a NZ Passport or birth certificate, or for those born outside NZ, proof of permanent residence status in NZ is required.

The application form must be accompanied by:

  • proof of institution attended or to be attended
  • courses passed with grades received
  • a typed Curriculum Vitae (CV) highlighting information relevant to the application
  • Proof of permanent residence status if not a NZ national
  • a copy of your Birth Certificate or Passport, if NZ national
  • two written signed references with contact details for the referees
  • e-mailed applications to be sent as one scanned document if possible

The shortlisted applicants will be interviewed personally in November/December.

The successful applicant will be notified in December with the presentation of the award being made at a Dinner Meeting to be held in February. The successful application is required to attend this evening unless unforeseen circumstances prevent this. In this case a proxy may stand in for her.

The successful applicant must show proof that she will be attending the course of study as stipulated in their application, before the award will be presented. If the winner is unable to do this, then the award will pass to the second/third selection and so on.

Areas which will be taken into consideration when selecting the successful applicant are:

  • achievement
  • interest in improving the status of women
  • need
  • personality
  • service

BPW has an expectation that the successful applicant will provide a written report at the end of each semester for the year to the BPW Franklin Coordinator. The successful applicant is expected to attend a BPW Meeting to receive the payment award and will be expected to give a 5-10 minute overview of their application highlighting what they have done to date and their aspirations for the use of their qualifications.

All applications received will be acknowledged and treated in confidence.
