What do you enjoy about teaching/your job?
As the Curator and Manager of Ramp Gallery (Wintec’s on-campus contemporary art gallery), I get to be creative and practical each day. Planning and executing a full schedule of exhibitions and events through the year is an exciting and privileged job with many wide-ranging responsibilities. As part of that job, I love being able to gather in a tight group of student volunteers to help me run the exhibition space too, as it is an opportunity for collaborative learning to happen.
What do you love about your area?
An art gallery is a great place to work! I love being able to host artists and exhibitions that are challenging and thought provoking. I see my role as important in being able to open the door to diverse voices and always strive for equality in my programming. I thrive on the collaborative process of developing exhibitions or problem solving with artists, and love the way each exhibition opens new connections, opportunities and friendships.
Tell us about your experience in the industry
I have a BMA from Wintec and a PGDipFA from Massey University in Wellington. My ‘first career’ when I left school was as a legal secretary, so have a strong background in administration. This, along with my art study, has helped me develop my arts administration career. I worked for years alongside other curators at Ramp Gallery and have been in the role of Curating since 2015.
What keeps you busy outside of Media Arts?
I am ‘Mum’ to two awesome girls that keep me constantly busy when off campus. I have been involved in community projects and was a founding member of the first Hamilton Zinefest in the city. I also have a music career as a jazz singer up on the shelf that I might bring back down one day!
