About

I come from a large multi-generational New Zealand-Irish farming family in Otago, in the South Island. I have a professional background as a journalist and am a writer by nature and training. For nearly 40 years I have combined that with teaching English as an Additional Language to Adults. In my spare time I enjoy doing yoga, gardening, watching movies, going to the theatre, music, reading, writing, being near the ocean or rivers, and learning to speak Irish Gaelic. I am active in women’s and environmental groups and organisations.

Awards

Publishing as a journalist, an editor and an academic, in areas that interest me. Beyond academia, this includes two books of interviews: Faces of the Goddess: New Zealand women talk about their spirituality (1997,Tandem Press) and Southern Celts: Stories from people of Irish and Scottish descent in Aotearoa (2023, Mary Egan Publishers)

Qualifications

My first degree was a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) at Otago University, majoring in English Literature. (Including Political Philosophy, French and History)

I did a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching English to Adults, and a Master of Arts in Teaching Language to Adults, at Auckland University, focusing on Social Identity and Language Acquisition

I was awarded a PhD in Educational Philosophy from Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia. It involved a Practice-led inquiry into how people of Irish and Scottish backgrounds live out their cultural traditions here in Aotearoa New Zealand.
