Research activity

My research is based around composing for piano and orchestra within the classical genre, with a focus on programmatic music. I have composed and performed piano pieces for various Wintec events around the city, and most recently composed a piano piece for the publication “Upon Returning. A collection of Piano Pieces”, published in 2024. Currently, I am working on a set of programmatic pieces for piano and writing a composition for a local Hamilton Wind Quintet.

What do you enjoy about teaching/your job?

Growing up in a musical family, I have been composing and performing as a pianist from a young age. I have experience playing as a violinist in orchestras, and I’ve gigged in rock bands and many musicals as a keyboard player. My job at Wintec represents a natural extension of this lifelong engagement with music. Teaching provides a wonderful opportunity to share this enduring passion with students. More recently I have also been teaching students at a partner institution in China. This role has encompassed both online instruction and periods of in-person teaching on their campus, which has provided interesting cross-cultural and pedagogical insights.

What do you love about your area?

I feel very lucky to be able to spend each day engaging with students and colleagues, both teaching and making music, and creating and contributing to various Wintec projects, including external performances and shows. Within the music and performing arts department, I am privileged to work alongside a highly collaborative and supportive team fostering a culture of professional exchange and mutual encouragement.

Tell us about your experience in the industry

I have experience as a private piano teacher and as a performer and have gigged as a keyboard player in both cover and original bands across New Zealand and the UK. I have also worked within the broadcasting industry as an announcer and production engineer for The Radioworks.

What keeps you busy outside of Media Arts?

The beach is always my happy place and of course playing music with others is always a blast!
