What do you enjoy about teaching/your job?

I really enjoy working with a variety of people from different cultures in my job, particularly in the area of visual arts, although I am always impressed when I encounter works made by music and communication students. It's also very stimulating to work closely with postgraduate students, and it is a privilege to see how their projects evolve into original and professional projects.

What do you love about your area?

I enjoy the studio environment, where many students are doing a huge variety of work. The atmosphere is friendly, and we have many conversations about all manner of things, particularly about ideas in recent art. I'm excited by the way in which various kinds of artworks tell us about the world and also raise issues that we may not be aware of.

Tell us about your experience in the industry

I am engaged in making sculptures to show in fine art exhibitions. Being in dialogue with other artists and having exhibitions around New Zealand with other artists is very rewarding, but having some exhibitions in China with Chinese/NZ artists has been an incredible experience. I have also attended the Documenta exhibition in Germany several times, which is a great venue for encountering the most recent and influential fine art.

What keeps you busy outside of Media Arts?

I enjoy my time in my studio, working on the small piece of land I live on, and caring for my animals. I like to keep fit walking, tramping and cycling, and also horse riding. Family and friends are important for me, and I like to learn a new language from time to time.
