Areas of Expertise and Research

Hong specialises in thermal spray coatings and carried out extensive research in the past on plasma spray technology, thermal barrier coatings, metal forming processes, ceramic composite materials, materials analysis, characterisation and testing. He has presented and published extensively at international conferences and in peer reviewed international journals. He also holds a number of Chinese patents. These publications and patents cover the fabrication and characterization of nanostructured thermal barrier coatings, laser surface treatment, and powder metallurgy. He was a reviewer of manuscripts for Surface and coating technology, journal of materials science, materials letters etc.

Hong also has 4-year teaching experience in New Zealand. He teach many core papers as a lecturer in the field of mechanical engineering for NZDE and BEngTech programs at Waikato Institute of Technology. Student centred activities are applied in his teaching.
