This school is strategically placed to meet the needs of learners, graduates and industry; regionally, nationally and internationally. This is achieved through programmes that are developed to meet the specific needs of the industries it is aligned with through its Centres of Excellence; Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, Hospitality. The programmes; full time, part time and short courses are a mix of local, national and international qualifications.

The School prides itself with its association with its relevant industry organisations; these again have local, national and international connections. Well developed links with the respective industry Associations is also maintained.

Currently the Centre's suite of qualifications offers a wide range of programmes in the service industries from hairdressing and beauty therapy to cookery, hospitality and restaurant and beverage service. All programmes are developed to meet the needs of their respective industries. These provide a large input into the New Zealand economy; from a financial and employment aspect. The programmes provide diverse opportunities for graduates and a broad range of career paths.

The training and qualifications have local, national and international relevance which is achieved through best practice facilitation, modern facilities, current industry technologies, flexible delivery and contemporary practices.

Centre for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy

City and Guilds Approved Centre logoIs located in Wintec's R Block, Collingwood Street, in state of the art purpose built facilities.  There are two fully equipped hairdressing salons; Urban Hair One and Urban Hair Two providing realistic work base learning opportunities.  This is achieved through providing learners with experiential hands on learning working with clients to provide hair care, hair services and retail sales. 

Urban Spa which caters for beauty, body and spa training also prides itself in offering learners the opportunity to develop and grow their skills, knowledge and experiences by offering such services as massage techniques, nail technology, makeup artistry and Vichy Spa services to clients.  The Diploma in Beauty, Body and Spa Therapies (Level 5) also provides learners to achieve an international qualification through City and Guilds of London Certificate and Diploma ( 

All equipment throughout the practical environments is all up to date to ensure learners receive exposure to current trends and industry requirements. Retail products are sourced from professional industry suppliers offering the latest in hair and beauty treatments. 

The Centre also conducts off job training for hairdressing apprentices.

Industry Work Placement forms a key part of the programmes at the Centre for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy. This provides learners with valuable opportunities to put into practice the learning they have achieved in the classroom environment.

Centre for Hospitality

City and Guilds Approved Centre LogoA range of programmes are offered in cookery, restaurant and beverage service; on a full time and part time basis. All programmes lead to nationally recognised qualifications. The cookery programmes offer learners the opportunity to gain the internationally recognised City and Guilds of London Certificate and Diplomas ( In addition industry specific short courses are offered in the areas of Food Safety and the Licence Controller qualification.

All hospitality courses are delivered in our new hospitality building on the Rotokauri Campus. We have two large commercial kitchens, a production kitchen, a restaurant with a seating capacity for 80 - featuring indoor and outdoor dining and a licensed bar.

In all our programmes practice and theory are taught hand-in-hand and students are afforded many opportunities to work with clients to learn the vital skills necessary for success in these vibrant industries. Further industry work placement occasions are provided to many of the learners, often leading to employment opportunities.
