Background

The Aniva Future Pacific Nurse Leaders programme aims to increase the number of Pacific learners of indigenous Pacific ancestry to complete their nursing programmes and successfully transition into the health workforce.

The Aniva Future Pacific Nurse Leaders programme is funded by Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand. The programme commenced in 2021 under the Ministry of Health and provides contribution grants to support undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students of indigenous Pacific Island ancestry who enroll with Aniva Future Leaders.

About

Aniva Future Pacific Nurse Leaders (AFPNL) is a support programme for undergraduate and pre-registration nursing students of indigenous Pacific Island ancestry. All Aniva Future Leaders students receive a grant each semester to assist with the nursing specific costs of study such as, health screening, vaccinations, equipment, uniform and clinical placement travel. 

​Aniva Future Leaders also provides networking opportunities with senior Pacific Nurses to explore a wide range of nursing roles, and support for examination bootcamps and Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) State Final Examinations.

Eligibility

Aniva Future Pacific Nurse Leaders grants are available to all new and existing undergraduate and pre-registration nursing students of indigenous Pacific Island descent studying at Wintec.

Students must be enrolled in one of the following approved undergraduate nursing programmes:

  • Bachelor of Nursing 
  • Diploma of Enrolled Nursing
  • Master of Nursing Practice

​Students must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for the Aniva Future Pacific Nurse Leaders programme:​

  • Enrolled in an approved undergraduate nursing programme at Wintec.
  • A New Zealand citizen, resident or permanent resident at the time of application.
  • Of indigenous Pacific Island descent* and able to provide evidence of indigenous Pacific Island ancestry*.
  • Submit a correctly completed application form with all supporting documentation required.

*Note: You must be of indigenous Pacific Island descent from any of the following islands: American Samoa, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Hawaii, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Rapanui (Easter Island), Rotuma, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Wallis and Futuna.

How to apply

New nursing students and existing nursing students who have not applied to Aniva Future Leaders previously, will need to join the programme by completing our online application form here: AFPNL New Application.

Existing Aniva Future Leaders who are continuing their nursing studies in 2026 are required to re-apply each semester by completing the renewal form here: AFPNL Renewal Form.

Applications for Semester 1 grant support will close 5pm, Sunday 31 May 2026.

Application process

Students must submit a correctly completed application form with all supporting documentation required below:

  • Copy of your current Wintec student ID card*
  • Proof of your bank account details i.e. bank statement or screenshot of bank account details
  • Proof on NSN number
  • Evidence of indigenous Pacific ancestry

​*New students may provide an enrolment confirmation letter showing their student ID number to start the application process and will be required to provide a copy of their student ID card as soon as possible.

​Students will need to agree to the terms and conditions of the programme.

​Application Steps

  1. Complete the online application form and upload your supporting documents.
  2. We will email you confirmation we have received your application.
  3. We will confirm your enrolment with your tertiary institution.
  4. We will complete processing of your application and notify you of the outcome of your application via email.
