Background

The Dame Te Ātairangikaahu Nursing Scholarships were established in 2006 by Wintec at Tūrangawaewae on the occasion of the conferment of the Wintec Honorary Fellowship to Dame Te Ātairangikaahu. The first scholarship was awarded in 2007.

About

The purpose of the scholarship is to assist Waikato Tainui students in undertaking full-time study towards one of the following qualifications offered by Wintec | Te Pūkenga: Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Midwifery, Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Diploma in Enrolled Nursing; and part-time or full-time study towards a postgraduate nursing qualification. The scholarship is awarded based on academic merit, character, and involvement in cultural and community life.

*In 2024, Wintec | Te Pūkenga will award seven scholarships. The scholarship will cover the cost of the recipient’s tuition fees. The tenure of each scholarship will be for a maximum of eighteen months for a diploma, three years for a degree, or up to two years for a postgraduate qualification.

Eligibility

Applicants must be registered on the Waikato Tainui roll. Each Scholarship holder shall be enrolled in one of the following Wintec | Te Pūkenga qualifications:

  • Diploma of Enrolled Nursing
  • Bachelor of Nursing
  • Bachelor of Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Physiotherapy
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing
  • Master of Nursing 

Students studying part-time at Wintec | Te Pūkenga towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing or Master of Nursing programmes are eligible to apply.

Conditions

Applicants will need to complete the online application form. A selection panel will assess all complete applications. The panel will include a Kiingitanga representative, the Wintec | Te Pūkenga Kaumātua; the Wintec | Te Pūkenga Executive Director Māori, the Head of Nursing (Hauora Māori), and the Centre Director for the Centre of Health and Social Practice.

The application must include:

  • The completed application form,
  • a written statement (up to 100 words), video or voice recording outlining how this scholarship will assist the applicant in furthering their career, particularly in Māori health, how it will support their personal development and their potential contribution to the community,
  • curriculum vitae, and
  • your referee's completed online scholarship referee questionnaire. This can be completed by a teacher or principal, a tutor, an employer, or a community/church leader (not a relative).

Please note:

  • Applicants may apply in either English or Māori.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be required to attend an interview.
