Graduate terminology

There are many terms used at Graduation. Listed below are some key terms and a brief description:

Academic dress
Refers to the academic gown, hood and trencher worn at the graduation ceremony (also known as regalia)

Academic transcript
Record of study showing all your results

Awarded
When you officially receive your Certificate or Diploma

Ceremony
The official and formal process where you receive your qualification

Conferred
When you officially receive your degree

Gown
The black coat that is worn

Graduand
When you are eligible to graduate but have not had your qualification conferred / awarded

Graduate
Once your degree has been conferred or your certificate / diploma has been awarded

Graduation parade
Procession through the city streets for all graduands

Hood
Worn with gown for Degree and Masters graduands

In absentia
You will not be attending a graduation ceremony and instead receive your certificate by mail

Marshal
Wintec staff member who assists graduands on the day of their ceremony to be in the right place at the right time

Parchment
The certificate you receive

Procession
The graduation parade through the city streets for all graduands

Regalia
Refers to the academic gown, hood and trencher worn at the graduation ceremony (also known as Academic Dress)

Stole
Worn with gown for Diploma graduands

Trencher
The cap (hat) that Degree graduands wear
