Course details

Summary

This programme will introduce students to the science of growing and caring for plants. Students will gain theoretical knowledge of growing systems and environments and then apply these skills in a garden while performing planting and general garden maintenance.

The General Horticulture (Level 3) certificate establishes all practical horticulture skills and is a great place to begin your journey into the horticulture industry.

What you will learn

Over a semester, students will learn about the following areas:

  • Plant identification and function
  • Propagating cuttings and growing plants from seeds
  • Soils and fertilisers
  • Pruning trees and shrubs
  • Identifying weeds, pests and diseases
  • Plant environments and appropriate plant selection

Study at Wintec is designed to reflect the industry graduates will be working in. This programme is hands-on, where students will put what they learn into practice and assist the Hamilton Gardens' team of gardeners.
