Wintec |Te Pūkenga hosted its long-awaited annual Employment Industry Dinner, following a three year break due to Covid-19. The event, which is strongly aligned to the organisation’s Tōia Mai excellence framework and achieving equitable outcomes guided by Te Tiriti, was hosted by the Kaitūhono Mahi team which supports Māori and Pacific trades training, led by Harris Huntley.
Cara Galletly is currently completing her Bachelor of Applied Management majoring in Human Resource last year. She was the Human Resource New Zealand (HRNZ) Waikato region student ambassador from 2021 - 2022. She says making connections is the key to succeeding in the Human Resource profession.

The focus this year is amplifying the voices of children and youth, showcasing the rich and diverse culture of our ethnic communities.
Second year Bachelor of Design student, Grace Parquist, 19, has been awarded the Gordon Chesterman Scholarship for 2023. The hardworking aspiring designer has held down the same job since the age of 15 and has always struggled with study-work balance.
“It’s all about minimising the carbon footprint,” says Michelle Caton, tutor of the Hair Design Certificate at Wintec | Te Pūkenga. “Everywhere we go and in everything we do, we’re thinking about raising awareness to minimise the impact on the environment and when students hear these ideas they’re keen to implement them.”
Caroline Stretch worked at Countdown for 20 years when an injury made her rethink her career and prompted her to make a change. While at Countdown, Caroline had gained her liquor licence, first aid certificate, food hygiene certificates and forklift licence. These were the only qualifications she had out of school. A career change would mean retraining, while still undergoing extensive surgery.
Alan Brenner has always been interested in nature and landscaping, so when he saw Wintec’s Horticulture programme was held at the Hamilton Gardens he immediately signed up.
The first offering of the Tōia Mai Suite of Trainings for 2023 kicked off in the April school holidays. Beginning at Te Kōpū Mānia o Kirikiriroa Marae, participants received an immersive experience on the marae and later by the Waikato River.
It’s hard to miss Design Factory NZ’s new location on campus. Just look for the striking and colourful vinyl designs on the windows of the ground-floor workshop spaces, situated in A Block opposite The Hub and Library.
