Summary

The Bachelor of Applied Management degree is designed for those with a drive to succeed in business, with a practical focus and a flexible structure. Learners choose from a range of majors and elective modules, gaining a broad range of business skills, specialist skills, and work experience in their chosen major.

You will have the opportunity to undertake collaborative real-world projects with students from other disciplines and with industry professionals. Majors in this degree include:

This degree's practical focus increases employment opportunities when students graduate, with small class sizes helping to build strong one-on-one learning relationships with tutors.​ The flexible structure allows students to choose from a range of majors and a wide variety of elective modules. Students have the opportunity to study full or part-time to fit around family, life, and work commitments.

What you will learn

Students will study eight compulsory modules in their first year, giving them a strong understanding of business management before they specialise in their second and third years. All students in their final year of study will complete Applied Work Integrated Learning (AWIL). This gives students an opportunity to be placed in industry, gain valuable work experience, and complete an agreed piece of research, increasing employment chances when they graduate. 

In their second year, students will study three modules specific to their major and a further three, which could either contribute to a second major or be elective modules based on the student's areas of interest. Students will also take the Applied Management and Research Methodology core modules.

Whether students choose one or two majors, if they study full-time, they will still complete their degree in three years.

Operation and Production Management

Get the skills to become an economic powerhouse. The broad scope of this major equips students with the skills to get the best results out of people and processes. The skills gained allow graduates to plan and implement production efficiencies that translate to what every business needs: a better bottom line.

In their first year, students will complete the eight core modules required for the applied management degree. These give students important broad skills they will need to excel in any area of business. Students will take three modules for the operation and production management major in the second year, choose three other modules that can be toward a second major, and two more core modules – Applied Management and Research Methodology. In their third year, students will study two more operation and production management modules and two other modules towards a second major. Students will also apply their skill on work placement with a local business.

Human Resource Management

Make a career out of being a 'people person'. In this major, students will gain the essential skills needed to get the most from a team of workers. Students will learn about staff management, recruitment, team member performance, up-skilling and development, and resolving workplace conflict.

In their first year, students will complete the eight core modules required for the applied management degree. These modules will give students the important broad skills needed to excel in any area of business. For their second year, students will take three modules for the human resources management major, choose three other modules that can be toward a second major, and two more core modules – Applied Management and Research Methodology. In the third year, students will study two more human resources management modules and two other courses towards a second major. Students will also apply their skill on work placement with a local business.

Sales and Marketing

Putting consumer theory into practice, students will graduate with skills in consumer behavioural analysis, domestic and international market theory, and applied marketing campaigns.

In their first year, students will complete the eight core modules required for the applied management degree. These will give students the important broad skills needed to excel in any area of business. For the second year, students will take three modules for the sales and marketing major, choose three other modules that can be toward a second major, and two more core modules – Applied Management and Research Methodology. In the third year, students will study two more sales and marketing management modules and two other modules towards a second major. Students will also apply their skill on work placement with a local business.

Retail Management

Develop the art of successful selling. With this major, students will develop skills in-store designs, marketing campaigns, customer in-store experiences and creating retail concepts to work in retail management.

In their first year, students will complete the eight core modules required for the applied management degree. These will give students the important broad skills needed to excel in any area of business.​ In the second year, three modules will be specific to retail management: services marketing management or e-commerce, marketing development, and sales and consumer behaviour. Students will also study applied management and select four other modules offered within the Bachelor of Applied Management (these could be part of a second major). In the third year, students will study retail marketing, retailing enterprise, and management. They will also take a research paper and choose one elective. In the third year, students will undertake the co-operative education project.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Make your ideas a reality. In this major, students will learn how to innovate and create game-changing products and services, build a great team, incorporate customers' feedback in developing a service or product, learn from failures and turn them into opportunities, raise funds needed for growth, and know-how to choose an appropriate and timely exit strategy.

In their first year, students will complete the eight core modules required for the applied management degree. These will give students the important broad skills needed to excel in any area of business. In the second year, students will take three modules for the innovation and entrepreneurship major, choose three other modules that can be towards a second major, and two more core modules - Applied Management and Research Methodology. In the third year, students will study two more innovation and entrepreneurship modules and two other modules towards a second major. Students will also apply their skill on work placement with a local business.

Supply Chain Logistics

In the second year, students will take three modules for the supply chain logistics major, choose three other modules, which can be towards a second major, and two more core modules - Applied Management and Research Methodology. In the third year, students will study two more supply chain logistics modules and two other modules towards a second major. Scheduling and workload

As a general guideline, the expectation is that students will be required to be at Wintec up to five days per week (as a full-time student).  This can be from Monday to Friday anytime between 8am and 7pm. The maximum in-class time would be 16 hours per week plus self-directed study or work placement.

Ezra's story


Ezra is a Wintec graduate of the Bachelor of Applied Management in Sales and Marketing and was a recipient of the Prime Ministers Scholarship which led him to completing a portion of his study in China.

Upon completion of his degree, Ezra secured a position with the Waikato Chamber of Commerce as a Business Development Manager.

Applied Work Integrated Learning

Applied Work Integrated Learning (AWIL) is a formal part of the Centre for Business and Enterprise's (CBE) Bachelor of Applied Management degree and graduate diploma programmes.

In a business student’s final year of study, they will undertake AWIL, an opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real work environment.

Design Factory NZ

In their third year of study, students can apply to study the 30 credit Design Factory NZ module. This experience teaches a range of problem-solving methodologies, which students will apply to a real-world challenge provided by an industry partner. Students will work in a multi-disciplinary team alongside students from engineering, business, IT, sport and exercise science, media arts, and more. 

Joining Design Factory NZ will provide students with the opportunity to learn and work in new ways, prototype solutions to complex problems, and develop their soft skills of creativity, empathy and communication - all in high-demand for the workplace of the future.

Career/further opportunities

Depending on their major, graduates may go on to work in roles such as:

  • Human resource manager,
  • management consultant,
  • public administrator,
  • sales manager,
  • marketing manager,
  • advertising and business development, and
  • specialist management positions.

Entry criteria

Candidates are required to have:

i) NCEA Level 3 comprised of 60 credits at NCEA Level 3 or above and 20 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above, including:
  (1) 14 credits each at NCEA Level 3 in three approved subjects; and
  (2) Literacy  (10 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above made up of 5 credits each in reading and writing); and
  (3) Numeracy  (10 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above); or

ii) 72 credits at NCEA Level 2 including:
  (1) At least 14 credits in each of four subjects; and
  (2) UE Literacy   - 10 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above made up of 5 credits each in reading and writing; and
  (3) UE Numeracy   - 10 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above; or

iii) Satisfied the criteria for entrance to a New Zealand University, or an equivalent qualification approved by the Programme Committee; or

iv) Completed an appropriate overseas School qualification; or

v) Completed a year of study at an overseas Secondary School, and gained the equivalent of 60 credits at NCEA Level 2 across four subjects.

Special admission

    Domestic applicants aged 20 years or above who have not met the General Admission or entry requirements for a programme but whose skills, education or work experience indicate that they have a reasonable chance of success may be eligible for Special Admission.  Special admission will be granted at the discretion of the relevant Head of School/Centre Director or designated nominee.  Such applicants may be required to successfully complete a foundation, bridging or tertiary introductory programme as a condition of entry into higher-level programmes.

    Provisional entry

    Domestic applicants aged under 20 years who have not met the general academic admission and entry criteria for a programme but who can demonstrate a reasonable chance of success through other educational attainment and/or work or life experience may be eligible for provisional entry at the discretion of the relevant Head of School/Centre Director or designated nominee. Provisional entry places restrictions on re-enrolment to be lifted if the applicant’s performance is deemed satisfactory by the relevant Head of School/Centre Director or designated nominee.

    English language requirements
    Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 6.0, with no individual band score lower than 5.5; or equivalent.

    You are warmly invited to attend the official welcome to Wintec for all new students, staff and whānau (family) at either our marae, Te Kōpū Mānia o Kirikiriroa or Rotokauri campus. The pōwhiri is a welcoming ceremony involving mihimihi (speeches), waiata (singing), and will conclude with kai timotimo (light refreshments).
