“River City Sound Sessions” set to celebrate seven years

Two local Hamilton bands will perform live for the seventh year in the popular River City Sound Sessions

Current moving image and music students from Wintec’s School of Media Arts are set to collaborate on a live, daylong, multi-camera music shoot on Sunday 27 May at the Meteor Theatre, which will include performances from Deathnir and Jayde P and the Drag Kings.

Rehearsals are underway for third-year moving image production and audio post production students as they prepare for the client-based assignment where local Hamilton bands and performers become clients to the students.

Wintec moving image tutor and programme coordinator John Mandelberg says students prepare for the project over a 4-5 week period, film students rehearse for the multi-camera production with Wintec’s music students filling in as band members and performers.

“This prepares students to learn specific production skills and roles in this type of production that culminates in the one day live shoot.”

Mandelberg says that a project-based approach towards learning is beneficial to creative learners, and provides both context and a hands-on learning environment along with networking opportunities in the creative sector.

“This project helps develop the student's ability to understand the many roles, skills and functions in a multi-camera style production. Using collaborative work practices in a client based project, with musicians as the client.”

This project continues into its seventh year. Through the teaching and learning programme at Wintec’s Media Arts, it is a useful skill for drama, documentary, live editing and broadcasting.

“It works well with the students in third year, as they are able to transfer their single camera production skills to this kind of production. The process of live editing from multiple camera sources is learnt, and can then be related to all other variations on this type of production.”

Following the live recording, a 30-minute film will be edited to produce "River City Sound Sessions – Volume 7" and will be screened to the audience at this year's SPARK International Festival of Music, Media, Arts and Design, an annual celebration of the arts in all their forms held from 6-9 August 2018 at Wintec’s city campus.
