Summary
Build on your interest in numbers and gain the skills to become an accounting professional. Accounting is the financial language of measuring, interpreting and communicating financial information for businesses and organisations. Accountants are in demand in Aotearoa, New Zealand and worldwide, with good prospects to advance your career.
The Bachelor of Accounting will equip you with the theory and practice of accountancy in an ethical, socially responsible and sustainable way to provide accounting and business advice to companies, organisations and individuals that aligns with Ngā Kaupapa o te Tiriti o Waitangi.
You will explore a range of accounting topics through active and applied learning. Compulsory modules cover core business and accounting topics, enabling you to develop comprehensive professional skills, knowledge and capabilities. An elective in your third year allows you to focus on another topic of interest in business.
In your third year, you will also undertake a professional accounting project with a local business. This opportunity allows you to apply your learnings in a real-life, hands-on work environment that you can add to your CV for future employment.
This degree has both CAANZ and CPA accreditation meeting their academic eligibility for full membership, and can be studied either part-time or full-time. This allows graduates to become chartered accountants and comes with a range of benefits and networks across Aotearoa, New Zealand and worldwide. Our course structure gives you a breadth and depth of skills and knowledge to work as an accountant, with our graduates being known not only for being highly skilled, but also for being able to hit the ground running.

Elective modules
Any approved 15-credit module at levels 5, 6 or 7.
Scheduling and workload
As a general guideline, the expectation is that you will be required to be in class up to five days per week (as a full-time student). This can be from Monday to Friday anytime between 8am and 7pm. The maximum in-class time would be 16 hours per week plus self-directed study or work placement. Our small class sizes help to build strong one-on-one learning relationships with tutors.
Applied Work Integrated Learning
Applied Work Integrated Learning (AWIL) is a formal part of the Centre for Business and Enterprise Bachelor of Accounting degree and graduate diploma programmes.
In the final year of study, ākonga will undertake AWIL, gaining the opportunity to integrate their theoretical and practical knowledge in an authentic workplace environment.

An accounting qualification can lead you into all kinds of industries, working as a trusted business adviser to make strategic financial decisions while reducing exposure to financial risk. Graduates may go on to work in roles such as:

Entry criteria
You can apply for this programme if you are at least 16 years of age on the programme start date for the semester and meet one of the below admission requirements.
General admission
- University entrance
- NCEA Level 3
- Three subjects at Level 3, made up of:
- 14 credits in each of the three approved subjects
- Literacy – 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of:
- 5 credits in reading
- 5 credits in writing
- Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of:
- achievement standards - specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or
- unit standards - package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627- all three required).
or
- Satisfied the criteria for entrance to a New Zealand University with an equivalent to the above from another secondary qualification.
or
- Successful completion of an approved qualification at Level 4 or above with a relevant pathway.
Special admission
Applicants who are at least 20 years of age on the programme start date for the semester and who do not meet the level of general admission requirements above and who believe that they have the level of preparedness for study at this level may apply for special admission. In assessing whether to grant special admission the primary focus will be on the applicant’s ability to demonstrate a likelihood to succeed in the programme. All decisions will be at the discretion of the Relevant Academic Authority.
Discretionary admission
Applicants who do not meet the general admission requirements stated above and who believe that they have the level of preparedness for study at this level may apply for discretionary admission. In assessing whether to grant discretionary admission the primary focus will be on the applicant’s ability to demonstrate a likelihood to succeed in the programme. All decisions will be at the discretion of the Relevant Academic Authority.
English language requirements
International applicants are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 6.0, with no individual band score lower than 5.5 from one test taken in the last two years, or equivalent described in NZQA Rules.
