From writing music to writing code, new computer skills land a job for Naydeen

Naydeen Sanelivi has always been fascinated by technology. After realising that studying a music degree wasn’t what she wanted to do, along with the fact everything she learnt from high school and life was almost outdated, she enrolled in Wintec’s Certificate in Computing to refresh her memory, learn new things, and stay relevant.

The Certificate in Computing is a hands-on course where students learn intermediate computing skills to prepare them for work or further study.

Thanks to the Certificate in Computing, Naydeen was able to land a job in the energy sector, and can build her career with the skills she gained at Wintec.

Naydeen opted to study the Certificate in Computing online, as this meant she could work at her own pace, study from anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection or even utilise the early hours of the morning when she couldn't sleep. The Certificate in Computing course is also delivered face-to-face at the Wintec City Campus.

Naydeen learnt many things on the course, such as writing reports, quick formatting tips, beginners coding and basic website development.

“A highlight of the course was taking part in a simulated work project. We were tasked with planning, designing, creating and bringing a brand to life. This included everything from writing a proposal, drawing up realistic timelines, drafting logos, selecting colour schemes and even presenting the end product to a “client” complete with a voice over and PowerPoint effects.”

Naydeen explains that her tutor supported her every step of the way and extensive online support was provided.

“My experience with Wintec was very virtual. I communicated with my lecturer via email, Moodle (Wintec’s online tool for students) or Trello and only ever met classmates at the last assignment. My lecturer invested so much time and effort in making sure we all passed. I felt that she took the time to know me personally and make distance learning a lot less scary.”

Naydeen’s tutor, Jaculin Petherick says she was a star student.

“Her work was excellent and she created an amazing website. As soon as the course ended she applied for a job and went straight into work.”

Naydeen is currently working for Energy Online, a subsidiary of Genesis Energy, where she is a Customer Excellence Representative (CER). Her role focuses on answering customer calls and ensuring their issues are resolved.

She explains the skills she learnt at Wintec were transferable to landing the job.

“I revisited my CV and cover letter to make it visually appealing. I also use Microsoft Suite a lot in my day to day work just like I did during the course. Because of this, I can quickly format and create templates for customers. I also learnt email etiquette, health and safety precautions for a desk job such as sitting correctly on your chair and how to set up your screen, along with computer security basics,” says Naydeen.

“Studying computing at Wintec has definitely changed my life for the better. I gained a better understanding of various apps, MS Suite and coding. Without the support of my lecturer and my mother, I wouldn't have finished as proudly or even secured this job.

“I'm really looking forward to taking the next step in the technology industry.”
