Wintec science students now have access to a newly redeveloped state-of-the-art chemistry laboratory on the polytech’s City Campus in central Hamilton.

Built over half a decade ago, the original lab at Wintec’s City Campus has undergone a major $1.63M upgrade (initially budgeted at $1.76M), modernising the facility for future hands-on learning and teaching.
Designed with local workforce needs in mind, the new facility supports programmes linked to key Waikato strengths, including environmental science, biotechnology, dairy processing, and food technology.
The new space was officially opened yesterday at a special ceremony attended by local dignitaries, industry representatives, Wintec leadership and tutors.
Members of Wintec’s newly established council were also in attendance, including council Chair Sheree Ryan, who addressed the gathering.

“I’m honoured that the opening of this great facility is my first official engagement as Chair,” said Sheree.
“STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics] capability is critical to the growth and resilience of the Waikato region and beyond. These labs will help ensure Wintec continues to play a strong, connected role in developing the skilled workforce our region needs.”
The reopening was a particularly special moment for Dr Shelley Wilson, Wintec Executive Director – Academic Delivery, who has spent a large portion of her career involved with Wintec’s Centre for Applied Science.

“Since the building first opened in 1974, more than 10,000 ākonga have learned here. Many have gone on to careers they may never have imagined when they first put on a lab coat,” said Shelley at the opening event.
“These labs have never just been rooms full of equipment. They’ve been places of discovery, confidence-building, late nights before assessments, and those moments when something finally clicks for a learner.”
“This new lab facility reflects how science is practised today, collaborative, applied, technology-enabled, and closely connected to industry.”
