New scholarship for Chinese students coming to Wintec

Wintec has teamed with Hamilton City Council to offer new international scholarships to students from Chengdu University in China.

The Hamilton–Chengdu Cultural Exchange Travel Scholarships will provide $10,000 in travel support to Chengdu students coming to Hamilton, New Zealand, to study with Wintec.

Wintec’s longstanding partnership with Chengdu University spans joint educational programmes, student and staff exchanges, and extensive cultural exchange initiatives, benefiting over 10,000 students from both institutes.

“We have been building partnerships in the Sichuan Province since 2008 and have welcomed many students from partner institutions like Chengdu University over the years,” said Wintec Operations Lead, Warwick Pitts.

“We welcome this opportunity to further deepen these relationships and are excited to welcome ākonga from across Chengdu.”

Warwick is delighted with the positive experiences international visitors have when they study with Wintec.

“We’re very proud that hundreds of international ākonga from around the world choose Wintec as their tertiary educator each year.

“It’s a privilege to be able to share our region’s educational, vocational, and cultural landscape with our academic visitors, and benefit from the cultural diversity they bring to our campuses and our domestic ākonga”.

Warwick said Wintec is honoured to play a key role in this cultural and academic exchange, as it contributes to international understanding and supports local economic growth.

“We have a lot to offer, from our world-class programmes designed in collaboration with local industry, to the quality pastoral care we offer our learners.”

Mayor Paula Southgate, who recently announced the scholarship while at Chengdu University, believes it is a wonderful opportunity for Chengdu students and reflects the long-standing friendship between Hamilton and Chengdu.

“Academic partnerships like this are truly a win-win – culturally, socially, and economically. Hamilton is positioning itself as a destination of choice for international students,” said Paula.

With 148 Chinese ākonga already studying at Wintec and the institute’s international enrolments projected to grow by 30% in 2025, Wintec is excited to welcome more global learners to its campuses.
