Through the work of Tōia Mai, Wintec |Te Pūkenga is on an exciting journey to improve outcomes for ākonga by launching a new cultural competency and capability framework, Whakatupu Kaiako, Whakatupu Tāngata.
With a focus on the cultural growth and development of kaiako and kaimahi the Whakatupu Kaiako, Whakatupu Tāngata framework aims to guide staff at Wintec I Te Pūkenga through a cycle of ongoing professional growth and development leading to a shift in understanding and desire to apply the learnings.
“These shifts will position Wintec | Te Pūkenga to respond to the needs of Te Tiriti partners, priority ākonga, whānau, hapū, iwi and the wider hāpori through demonstrable Te Tiriti partnerships,” says Pouārahi Māori, Teurikore Biddle.
Leading the implementation of Whakatupu Kaiako, Whakatupu Tāngata in Te Tiriti partnership are Merirangitīria Rewi and Margaret Naufahu.
Margaret, who is also Centre Director for Education and Foundation Pathways and Centre for Sport Science and Human Performance says, “We have a very clear mandate from Te Pūkenga around expectations in relation to providing equitable outcomes for ākonga and being deliberate in our commitment to Te Tiriti partnership responsibilities.
“To build our capability and competency and collectively make a real difference for our ākonga, then we need clear guidance, and I see Whakatupu Kaiako, Whakatupu Tāngata as providing this guidance.”
Whakatupu means to cultivate or to grow and derives from the fertile gardens once situated along the banks of the Waikato River and the abundance of food which sustained the people of Tainui. It is now the home of the Wintec | Te Pūkenga City Campus where the growth and sustenance of our communities is still one of the driving influences of our mahi.
Merirangitiria Rewi, Kaihautū says, “The cyclical nature of the framework grows kaimahi to confidently respond to ākonga needs through mātauranga Māori, values and in alignment with the provisions of Te Tiriti”
“Through co-construction and wānanga we have designed and tested a three-hour workshop, and a self-assessment tool to support kaimahi to take the words off the page, realise their own potential and implement Whakatupu Kaiako, Whakatupu Tāngata throughout the organisation.”
