Herehia Sanford’s path from Wintec graduate to cultural ambassador for Tahiti

Wintec’s City campus recently had a visit from Herehia Sanford, a former Wintec student and 2024 Miss Heiva.

A graduate of Wintec’s Centre for Business Enterprise, Herehia received her Diploma in Business Studies Level 5.

She now works for herself as a freelance nature guide in French Polynesia, utilising her knowledge and passion for tourism, environment, science, and culture.

Having received a scholarship to study in New Zealand, Herehia began her learning journey with us in 2016.

“Wintec was one of the best experiences of my life. I’ve had many different experiences, but this was the first one that opened my mind. I would definitely recommend Wintec to other people.”

During her time here, she lived with a local homestay family, made friends, improved her English skills, and immersed herself in Kiwi and Māori culture.

“The people here are very proud of their culture; they do the haka and speak the language.

“I was hanging out with a lot of people from different countries that were also proud of their culture and of speaking their language, and I was just here, no one with me speaking Tahitian.

“So when I moved back, I was determined to learn Te Reo Mā'ohi [Tahitian language]. Now I am fluent in Tahitian and I know a lot about my history.

"I think Aotearoa New Zealand made me realise, don’t forget who you are and where you come from.”

Herehia was crowned Miss Heiva at the 2024 Miss Tahiti contest, a competition which aims to highlight the beauty and culture of Polynesia.

A coveted title, the role of Miss Heiva encompasses being a cultural ambassador for Tahiti, showcasing traditional Tahitian values, and promoting the preservation of Polynesian heritage.

An avid learner, Herehia has always had an appreciation for knowledge.

“For me, knowledge has always been something I’ve wanted to accumulate. The learning never stops.”

Travelling to New Zealand to study was “scary at first” for Herehia, but her thirst for adventure spurred her on.

She believes others should “jump into adventure if there is an opportunity, take it.”
