Wintec welcomes first EVs in the drive to a zero-emission car fleet

Wintec has chosen the Hyundai Ioniq to launch its zero emission EV fleet

Wintec is about to  launch its new EV fleet with eight Hyundai Ioniqs.

A row of new Electric Vehicle (EV) smart chargers in the Wintec Hamilton campus car park building signals the arrival of eight electric vehicles and Wintec’s move to a zero-emission car fleet.

The first four Hyundai Ioniq EVs will be available for Wintec staff from mid-February with four more arriving in March this year.

Wintec Chief Financial Officer, Paul Holloway says the move to an electric vehicle fleet is effective in reducing CO2 emissions, and the cost-saving to Wintec over time is significant.

“Our analysis shows that if the first four electric vehicles do the same number of kilometres as our current petrol-driven car fleet, then we’d save more than $9,000 on annual fuel costs. By introducing eight EVs, we’ll effectively pay off the chargers within a couple of years.”

Holloway adds that funding from EECA has greatly reduced the initial outlay by covering  50 percent of the cost of the chargers and installation.

Wintec worked with WEL Networks to launch the EV project. WEL is helping businesses get future-ready with their EV charging infrastructure. From early adopters to EV newbies, WEL is helping businesses save time and money, on transitioning their fleet.

The team at WEL carried out analysis, arranged the chargers and will provide ongoing support for Wintec.

“As the world’s energy focus shifts to renewables and long-term sustainability – it’s good to know looking ahead is already a big part of what drives us in the first place. With world-class energy expertise, we’re excited to be at the forefront of the EV evolution and working with ambitious organisations such as Wintec to shape a better, more renewable future – together,” WEL Networks General Manager Energy Services Kerry Green says.

At this stage Wintec will retain some ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles until there are viable utility and minibus options for towing and trips away.

The Hyundai Ioniq was chosen by Wintec for price, availability, kilometre range and comparable boot size.

When the first EVs arrive, Wintec staff can expect live demonstration sessions and an online training video to help with the transition to EVs.
