A tick for gender equality at Wintec
Wintec is the first education provider in New Zealand to receive the GenderTick, showing a commitment to gender equality in the workplace.
To receive the GenderTick, Wintec had to demonstrate gender equity across five key indicators: a gender inclusive culture, flexibility and leave, women in leadership, gender pay equality and ensuring a safe workplace.
“Wintec impressed us with the work they’ve been doing around trying to eliminate bullying as well as their commitment to authentic gender equality in their workplace. As a place of learning for many young people, Wintec has a responsibility to model healthy workplace practises, which they are doing in regard to gender," said GenderTick Co-Directors, Zoe Brownlie and Kaisa Wilson.
"Wintec is the first tertiary education provider to be awarded the GenderTick, and we are very proud to have them on board.”
Wintec Chief Executive, Dave Christiansen, says Wintec has put a lot of hard work and effort into ensuring a gender equitable workplace.
“Receiving the GenderTick is another step on our journey to being a diverse and inclusive organisation, which in turn helps us to be a reputable employer and educator. We are very excited and immensely proud to have been recognised as the first education provider in New Zealand to be awarded the GenderTick.”
Wintec joins an elite group of New Zealand organisations that have received the GenderTick since the programme’s inception in 2018. Fellow members include Air New Zealand, Lion NZ, Coca-Cola Amatil, Fonterra, SkyCity Entertainment Group, Auckland Council, Kiwibank, Meridian Energy and Genesis Energy.
The GenderTick is the latest in Wintec’s string of accolades for excellence as an employer.
Last year Wintec was the first organisation in the Waikato to be awarded the WorkWell Silver Standard Accreditation, recognising Wintec’s ongoing commitment to its staff and their wellbeing.
Wintec also received the Innovation Award at the YWCA Equal Pay Awards in 2019, recognising the Wintec Industry Sharing Experience (WISE) programme which allows staff and students to form valuable partnerships with employers through industry secondments and teaching partnerships.
Katrina Van de Ven, Wintec’s Executive Director People and Culture and Acting Dean, was honoured as the 2019 New Zealand HR Manager of the Year by the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand (HRINZ).
In 2018 Wintec’s commitment to creating equal pay opportunities was acknowledged with a Best Practice Compact award at the YWCA Equal Pay Awards.
The Gender Tick programme was created by YWCA Auckland with the assessment managed by leading Diversity and Inclusion practitioner, Dr Kaisa Wilson.
The programme is accredited by YWCA Auckland, who are part of the world’s largest women’s organisation which leads social and economic change in over 100 countries worldwide.
