Summary
This programme is designed for those engaged in adult and tertiary teaching or training. Students will learn the foundation knowledge, skills and attributes required for starting out in an adult and tertiary teaching or training career, including how to engage learners and create fun and inclusive learning environments.
Student learning is blended - they will learn both online and through face-to-face learning experiences. This enables students' flexibility to complete the programme while they work and enables them to contextualise learning and assessments to their role and workplace.
This programme is delivered over 12 months, with a flipped classroom model. Students will learn content at home prior to class (online) and then use class time to explore, apply, or critique what they've learned. The total study time (up to 400 hours) includes four face-to-face sessions, with the remaining hours of learning completed online, in a student's own time. This equates to approximately nine hours of study per week.
To be successful in this programme and to meet assessment requirements, students must be able to facilitate training sessions with a group of at least three adult learners. Access to a computer and reliable internet is essential to complete pre-course activities and manage self-directed study. To enable maximum application of skills and knowledge back into a student's role and workplace, having the full support of their manager for the duration of the programme is encouraged.
Career/further opportunities
Graduates of this programme will have the skills and knowledge for industry or workplace trainer or community educator roles.
Graduates may undertake further study towards Level 5 qualifications in adult and tertiary teaching.

Entry criteria
General admission
You can apply for this programme if you meet one of the following:
- 40 credits at NCEA Level 1, including 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits, or
- a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 2, or
- a recognised equivalent.
Special admission
Anyone who is 20 years of age or older and has not reached the general admission requirements is eligible for Special Admission. We work with ākonga (learners) to ensure they are prepared for their intended programme.
Discretionary entrance
Anyone who is not yet 20 years of age and has not reached the general admission requirements for their intended programme may be eligible for Discretionary Admission. In assessing whether to grant Discretionary Admission, the delegated authority focuses on the applicant’s level of preparedness for their intended programme.
English language requirements
International applicants must provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency and are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) General or Academic band score of 5.5, with no individual band score lower than 5.0 from one test taken in the last two years, or equivalent described in NZQA Rules.
