Summary

This programme is for those needing more advanced skills for tertiary study, training or work in New Zealand. Students will develop oral and written English language skills to understand and use more complex language in an academic or employment context.

This programme is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) low B2.

Career/further opportunities

Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Applied) (Level 3) will have the English language skills to work in positions that require:

  • Participation in face-to-face interpersonal communication
  • Response to basic, context-specific texts
  • Production of simple, context-specific record-keeping

This certificate builds on the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (General) (Level 3) and can lead to:

  • New Zealand Certificate in English Language (General) (Level 4)
  • New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Employment) (Level 4)
  • New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4)

This certificate facilitates meeting the language requirements for other study or training programmes/courses at New Zealand Qualifications Framework Level 4 or below.

Entry criteria

General admission

a) Candidates must be 16 years or older.
b) Candidates must have achieved NZCEL (General) (Level 3); or
c) Have achieved an IELTS score of 5.0 across all bands, or equivalent; or
d) Candidates must take part in a selection interview and will be required to take a placement test to determine their current English Language level and learning goals.

Selection criteria

Candidates must demonstrate a reasonable chance of success in the programme.

He reo pōwhiri, your official welcome to Wintec

Tēnei te mihi mahana ki a koe e piki nei, e kake nei ki te Kuratini o Waikato.

You are warmly invited to attend the official welcome to Wintec for all new students, staff and whānau (family) at either our marae, Te Kōpū Mānia o Kirikiriroa or Rotokauri campus. The pōwhiri is a welcoming ceremony involving mihimihi (speeches), waiata (singing), and will conclude with kai timotimo (light refreshments). Please gather at the campus hubs, and a staff member will guide you through our pōwhiri.
