Amenity Horticulture

The care and maintenance of parks, gardens and open spaces.

One of the most rewarding and diverse areas of study there is. You can make a difference to the world around us! Amenity Horticulture is a full time programme to level 4 offered at the Hamilton Gardens campus. 

Whether it be public or private gardens, parks and open spaces, interior plantings or urban landscapes, we will give you the knowledge, training and skills to contribute to this dynamic and exciting global industry.

Amenity Horticulturist’s are professionals within their field and advise on plant choices, oversee horticultural programmes, plan regeneration projects, and manage parks, gardens and open spaces. Creating and maintaining the spaces we use directly contributes to society and people’s wellbeing.

My Career Pathway (Horticulture) (Level 2)

Are you keen to work outside doing a bit of building, planting and tree work? Are you interested in learning to grow your own fruits and vegetables to feed your family? Then this is the course for you!

My Career Pathway's Horticulture strand is a hands-on, practical programme where you will work with your class to build and create a food garden. Your classroom is not confined to just a room, but a garden where you will be doing the building, planting and growing.

You do not need any qualifications, previous experience or skills for enrol in this course. We will show you how to do everything you need to do. Join us on this pathway that will get you started with a practical life working outside.


Typically students will study the following programmes over two years to develop the skills and knowledge to be amenity gardeners, collection curators, grounds people or amenity contractors:

First Year

In the first year students will study either the General Horticulture (Level 3) or the Applied Horticultural Services (Level 3) (Amenity)

Students who choose to complete their study after the first year will have the skills to work as a skilled labourer in this area.

Second Year

In your second year you will study the Advanced Horticultural Trades (Level 4) (Amenity). Graduates will be qualified amenity gardeners.

Higher Level

If you wish to progress to Head Gardener or Parks Supervisor and you have completed the Level 4 programme or have equivalent experience the one year New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Services (Level 5) Amenity Strand is for you. This programme will not be delivered until 2018, subject to approval.
