To provide students with the necessary knowledge, attributes and skills to maintain a safe working environment, to keep animals in a positive welfare state. Students will also learn the basic skills for effective, appropriate and ethical communication in the workplace.

Describe health and safety requirements outlined in relevant New Zealand legislation as it relates to the Animal Care workplace.
Summarise key animal ethics and animal welfare principles in relation to relevant New Zealand legislative requirements.
Describe and apply appropriate and ethical communication strategies within the workplace.
Content
-Animal welfare in New Zealand in relation to the 5 Domains of welfare
-Employer and employee obligations
-Legislative requirements; local by-laws
-Identification and assessment of hazards
-Basic referencing
-Ethics in the workplace
-Sustainable practice
-Interpersonal skills, including spoken, written and digital, to enhance workplace communications
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Learning will facilitated using a range of teaching and learning methods, which may include:
-Practical - laboratory; practical or workshop sessions and activities; demonstrations; field trips/industry visits; projects
-Theory - includes web-supported tutor facilitate/directed presentations; lectures and tutorials; group activities; peer presentations and review; group/individual research; online learning activities; case studies; guest speakers; projects
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is mixed mode. Students must gain a minimum mark of 50% in the achievement-based assessments and meet all requirements of the competency-based assessments to pass this module. The final grade will be based on the marks for the achievement-based assessment task.
