Prescription
Sport, health and fitness professionals are increasingly becoming self-employed. This module aims to provide students with the knowledge of the personal training industry and the environment within which personal trainers may operate in. Furthermore this module introduces students to business basics of personal training, sales, lead generation, financial elements of personal training, and retention strategies necessary to develop and run a successful personal training business operation with an understanding of consumer law. The module provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to establish their own personal training business, and/or extend the scope of an existing business venture in a variety of settings.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this Module, it is expected that students will be able to:

1.0 Analyse the personal training environments in which trainers operate.
- Identify the personal trainer's scope of practice and discuss their relationship with
associated health and fitness professionals.
- Identify and describe the environments that personal trainers operate within.
- Examine and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of establishing a personal
training business in a variety of health and fitness contexts

2.0 Analyse the personality traits, knowledge and skills exhibited by personal trainers that
influence the success of their business.
- Analyse the personality traits exhibited by personal trainers in terms of their suitability for
working with customers and operating in the fitness industry
- Analyse the areas of knowledge and skills used by personal trainers in terms of their
value and use in meeting customer expectations and operating a successful personal
training business.
- Complete a self-analysis with regards to your own personality traits, knowledge and
skills and your suitability to becoming a personal trainer.
- Identify and develop a business scope, personal philosophy and approach to personal
training.
- Identify and explain the needs, features and benefits customers may have when
implementing a personal exercise programme with a personal trainer

3.0 Investigate small business opportunities for establishing, or participating in, a personal
training venture
- Discuss the New Zealand Personal training business environment and describe the
characteristics of small business
- Identify sources of advice and assistance available for small business.
- Assess ownership options and finance options for owning or participating in a personal
training venture

4.0 Undertake a market analysis to determine the demand for personal training services
within a personal training environment
- Develop and discuss current marketing tools of personal training
- Identify and profile potential target markets
- Identify and discuss existing and/or potential competitors
- Assess and recommend options for the marketing and promotion of your PT products
and services.
- Identify current lead generating techniques in personal training

5.0 Describe performance measures and controls used for small business
- Identify and discuss risk management processes and retention strategies as they relate
to small business operations
- Examine Taxes, Good and service tax, ACC levies, insurances and discuss consumer
law of operating a small business operation
- Examine the financial elements of personal training

Range - Financial elements areas include: Forecasts, cash flow, Leads, lead conversion rates, average spend, frequency of spend, total/Gross income and expenses, invoicing and contracts

6.0 Produce a business plan for your personal training venture
- Develop a vision and mission statement
- Identify and define business goals and objectives, and relevant timeframes
- Generate documents required for a business operation

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching will involve blended delivery methods incorporating theoretical and practical classes including: face to face, lectures, tutorials, workshops, group activities, guest lecturers, on-line delivery, web technology and other methods as appropriate
