The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the salon environment, the role of the Salon Assistant, and the personal and professional practice attributes required to work in the hairdressing industry. They will also learn core competencies in customer service, retail product displays, and retail sales promotions.

- - The Salon environment, salon culture and hierarchy, and the role of the Salon Assistant
- Display of hairdressing products, product ranges, hairdressing services and promotions;
Maintenance and dismantling of hairdressing product displays.
- Salon workplace requirements and procedures; customer service skills; retail sales
promotions.
- Effective communication (written, spoken and non-spoken) and interpersonal skills
- Personal presentation and self-styling in a salon environment.
- Compliance with health, safety, hygiene and environmental policies in the salon
environment
- Professional practice attributes: reliability, punctuality, time management, following
instructions, adaptability, creativity, and teamwork. - Teaching and Learning Strategy
- Practical, theoretical, face to face, and on-line Moodle sessions including; lectures, tutorials, discussion, group activities, self-directed learning, practical workshops in training salons, inquiry-based learning, and project-based learning.
- Assessment Criteria
- Assessment in this module is mixed mode. To pass this module all assessments must be submitted and an overall pass mark of 50 is required. Students must also meet all the requirements of the competency-based assessment tasks. The final grade will be based on the marks from the achievement-based tasks.
- Learning and Teaching Resource
- An extended reading list will be supplied by the tutor at commencement of the module. This will be updated annually.
