Prescription
To enable health professionals to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to become competent cervical sample takers within the context of Aotearoa New Zealand. The objective of the module is to provide up to date knowledge and clinical support to enable health professionals to become competent cervical sample takers. The content and assessment processes include alignment to the National Cervical Screening Programme (NSCP) competencies and NZQA unit standard 29556 version 1 (10 credits) in cervical smear taking. The programme involves 2 two day blocks of theory training and a practical component. Students are required to undertake a series of samples to ensure that they can achieve competent practice and meet the current national prescribed adequacy rate.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the structure, purpose and benefits of the National Cervical Screening Register and programme.
2. Demonstrate competent technique for the taking of cervical samples and other required tests in accordance with NSCP Operational Policy and Quality Standards and meet optimal adequacy rates
3. Analyse the process of women’s participation in the NCSP in accordance with legislative requirements and the NCSP Operational Policy and Quality Standards.
4. Meet the needs of all women and identified priority groups for cervical screening, with thoughtful attention to barriers to participation, reduction of inequalities and strategies for improvement in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand.
5. Utilise and demonstrate sound clinical reasoning processes to interpret cervical screening results, initiate follow up action, and complete accurate documentation.
6. Reflect on and evaluate practice in order to provide a service that is both culturally safe and health promoting.
