- - Pathophysiology of Type 1 and type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular
- Awareness of diabetes care before, during and after pregnancy
- Health history taking and assessment frameworks
- Cardiovascular risk assessment and management
- Clinical reasoning and decision making
- Goal setting and management plan development
- Documentation and referral processes
- Screening and prevention of microvascular complications
- Glycaemic control and monitoring
- Weight management including diet and exercise
- Concurrent illness-sick day management
- Oral diabetes medication, Insulin, and related pharmaceuticals Treatment targets including parameters of blood glucose, blood pressure and lipid levels
- Working in a multidisciplinary team
- Principles and development of self-management - Learning Outcomes
- Upon successful completion of this programme the registered health professionals will be able to:
1. Systematically conduct a holistic assessment and, using critical thinking, interpret findings, plan, document, implement and evaluate the management of care with the client who has diabetes.
2. Interpret and integrate national and organisational guidelines and protocols to inform and guide best practice
3. Integrate the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and principles of cultural safety into the management plan.
4. Utilise effective interpersonal and therapeutic communication within professional practice
5. Reflect upon and evaluate the effectiveness of care provision, in a multidisciplinary context - Teaching and Learning Strategy
