On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Use correct scientific terminology to describe anatomical parts, body movements, and physiological principles.

2. Explain the structure and functions of cells and tissues.

3. Explain the basic structure and functions of the organs and organ systems and how they are integrated in homeostatic processes.

4. Demonstrate knowledge of chemistry that provides a foundation for the study of biochemical processes.

5. Develop skills in the use of technical equipment and accuracy in measurement and recording.

Content
1. Scientific terms
Organisation of the body

2. Cell structure and function
Cell membranes, cell transport mechanisms
Mitosis
Tissues

3 Body organisation - integration of structure and function
Integumentary, cardiovascular, haematological, lymphatic, respiratory, urinary, gastrointestinal, nervous, endocrine, musculoskeletal and reproductive systems

4. Basic chemistry - atoms, molecules, compounds, bonds, acids, bases, functional groups of organic compounds
Biochemistry - metabolism, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, enzymes

5. Measurement- eg temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, urinalysis
Tables, graphs, use of units.

Teaching and Learning Strategy
The theory will be presented in face-to-face, tutor-led, interactive classroom-based lectures, with audiovisual support. These will be supported by tutorials and laboratory practical sessions.

In the laboratory sessions, the students will be encouraged to work collaboratively to develop practical skills. Sessions will include investigations and enquiry-based activities.

Students will expand their learning by accessing a wide range of resources that are available at the institution such as the library, on-line learning material and self-tests, workshops and tutorials.

Teaching and learning processes focus on encouraging students to be independent learners within the tertiary environment. Processes of reflection, critical thinking and problem-solving will be facilitated.

Assessment Criteria
Assessment criteria: This is an achievement-based module in which students must gain an overall grade of 50 to pass.
