The aim of this module is to critically analyse complex issues of womens' social, environmental and psychological health.. The dilemmas and challenges of childbirth are explored from global, national and personal perspectives, and ethical issues are explored and evaluated.

- On completion of this module students will be able to:
1.Identify women and families with complex physical, social, cultural, environmental and psychological needs.
2.Integrate knowledge and understanding of the diversity that exists amongst childbearing women.
3.Critically analyse and discuss global trends in childbirth and explore the New Zealand context.
4.Evaluate and critically apply ethical concepts that inform and underpin midwifery practice. - Content
- Perinatal maternal mental health
Critique the literature related to complex issues of childbirth
Effects of ethnicity, culture, colonisation, religion, disability, age, sexuality and sexual orientation on the childbirth experience
Social crises including domestic violence, sexual abuse, substance abuse, infertility, poverty
Mid, late pregnancy and neonatal loss
Maternal and perinatal mortality
Psychopathology: includingdepression, schizophrenia, psychosis, bi-polar disorder, severe learning disorders

Working with grief - Teaching and Learning Strategy
- Teaching strategies and learning methods will include lectures and online exercises and independent study.
- Recommended Readings
- A list of current readings will be provided on Moodle. However students are expected to read widely.
- Assessment Criteria
- The final grade will be on the basis of the marks from the achievement based tasks. All assessments must be attempted and submitted. Failure to do so will result in a 'fail' for the paper.
