Prescription
The aim of this module is to develop the knowledge and skills base for midwifery care related to normal childbirth and the normal neonate within the model of partnership. This is underpinned by a knowledge base of the anatomy and physiology integral to the childbirth continuum.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of a midwife and the scope of midwifery
practice in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
2. Demonstrate evidence based practice using critical thinking skills across the spectrum of midwifery care
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the woman and newborn
throughout the normal childbirth continuum.
4. Demonstrate selected simulated practice skills in caring for a woman and newborn
throughout the normal childbirth continuum.
5. Discuss the woman/family/whanau experience throughout the normal childbirth continuum.
Content
- Role of a midwife and midwifery
- Holistic assessment of the woman and foetus/newborn during the childbirth continuum; including NZCOM decision points, interpretation of laboratory results and other investigations common in normal pregnancy
- Anatomy and physiology relating to pregnancy, labour and the puerperium including
menstrual cycle, pre-conceptual influences, foetal/newborn development, physiology of labour and the normal puerperium
- Nutrition for pregnancy and birth
- Recognition of physiological pregnancy, labour, birth and puerperium
- Planning and implementing therapeutic skills of midwifery care in partnership with the woman
- Midwifery skills:
- Abdominal palpation and auscultation of foetal heart
- Care in labour including assessment of labour progress
- Assessment of labour progress Estimation of blood loss
- Facilitation of normal labour and birth
- Examination of the placenta
- Estimating due date of birth
- Assessment of mother and new born, including Apgar assessment
- Pharmacology related to midwifery care during the childbirth continuum
Non-pharmacological methods and helping strategies
- Documentation
- Maternal and Neonatal resuscitation practice
- Vaccination
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching strategies and learning methods will include lectures, online exercises and independent study.
Assessment Criteria
Students must meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. All assessments must be attempted and submitted. Failure to do so will result in a 'fail' for the paper.

A list of current readings will be provided on Moodle. However students are expected to read widely.
