The aim of this module is to introduce students to knowledge and skills required to provide safe,competent and culturally safe midwifery care within the scope of normal childbirth. Midwifery practice will take place within the continuity of care model and the hospital setting.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1.Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of midwifery partnership in relation to: cultural safety, Turanga Kaupapa and midwifery practice.
2.Demonstrate knowledge, skills and communication in safe competent midwifery practice within the normal childbirth experience.
3.Demonstrate an understanding of accountability relating to midwifery practice.
4.Demonstrate a beginning ability to critically reflect upon their midwifery practice.

Content
Cultural competence and partnership
- Principles of cultural safety and Turanga Kaupapa and their application
to midwifery practice
- Principles of midwifery partnership and the application to practice

Knowledge and reflection
- Midwifery practice skills (those described in HLBM501) and midwifery knowledge when caring for a woman and newborn through the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods.
- The physical and physiological needs of the newborn
- Reflection on practice

Decision making and critical thinking
- Critical thinking skills
- Clinical problem solving, using a holistic midwifery framework
- Time management
- Processes of decision-making in the midwifery practice setting
- Diversity of midwifery practice and the complexities of decision-making
and relationships in the midwifery context
- Decision making skills

Professional accountability
- Concept of accountability and how accountability is demonstrated in
midwifery practice

Communication and documentation
- Communication skills (oral and written)
- Documentation
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching strategies and learning methods will be in practicum across a variety of midwifery practice settings. There will be assessment within practicum and reflection upon practicum.
Assessment Criteria
Students must meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. All assessments must be attempted and submitted. Failure to do so will result in a 'fail' for the paper.

Clinical competence includes completion of the required clinical hours and submission of a portfolio that includes goals, reflections, midwifery assessments, feedback from women and midwives, self-assessment and participation at praxis sessions.
Attendance at praxis sessions is compulsory to pass the module. Please see student handbook for details.

A list of current readings will be provided on Moodle. However students are expected to read widely.
