The aim of this module is to introduce students to midwifery knowledge and practice skills within the context of midwifery in Aotearoa/New Zealand. The philosophy of partnership is explored and skills of midwifery practice are developed.

- On completion of this module students will be able to:
1.Demonstrate an beginning understanding of the midwifery scope of practice.
2.Understand the principles of the midwifery partnership.
3.Recognise Mori as Tangata Whenua of Aotearoa/New Zealand.
4.Demonstrate a beginning understanding of safe and effective midwifery care using midwifery knowledge and selected midwifery skills. - Content
- Midwifery Knowledge
- Definitions of a midwife and midwifery
- Introduction to regulatory body (Midwifery Council) and professional body (New Zealand College of Midwives)
- Introduction to professionalism
- Midwifery partnership Treaty of Waitangi in relation to midwifery in New Zealand
- New Zealand College of Midwives standards of practice
- Pre-conceptual, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care of mother and new born including:
- Foetal growth and development
oStages of labour
oMechanism of labour
oIntroduction to the normal neonate
- Documentation
- Exploration of the concept of family/whanau and factors that influence it
- Place of birth
Practice Skills
Will include, but are not limited to, medical/surgical asepsis (hand-washing, sterile technique), gloving-ungloving, infection control, bed making, , correct moving, lifting and mobilisation, blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, urinalysis and MSU
NB Students are required to have a current comprehensive First Aid Certificate prior to commencing clinical placements. - Teaching and Learning Strategy
- Teaching strategies and learning methods will include lectures, tutorials, workshops, online exercises and independent study.
- Assessment Criteria
- Students must meet all the requirements of the competency based assessment tasks to be eligible for a final grade for this module. The final grade will be on the basis of the marks from the achievement based tasks. All assessments must be attempted and submitted. Failure to do so will result in a 'fail' for the paper.
