The aim of this module is to provide students with experiences that will enable them to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will empower them to become successful, independent adult learners at certificate level.

On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the attributes of an adult learner
2. Demonstrate knowledge of own preferred learning style and personality type
3. Identify learning strategies for various learning styles
4. Show an understanding of how brain dominance may impact on adult learners
5. Develop a range of learning strategies
6. Set personal goals that will keep the learner motivated
7. Understand how to establish a climate for personal learning excellence
8. Reflect on and evaluate personal learning experiences
9.Write regular responses to classroom learning experiences
10.Plan the research process
11.Identify methods of collecting information
12.Collect and record information from oral, written and visual sources

Knowles' attributes of an adult learner
Learning styles
Left brain, right brain dominance
Learning strategies including but not limited to:
- memory techniques: mnemonics, acronyms, pegging, colour, position, action, nonsense rhymes, rhythms etc
- reading strategies: identifying purpose, mindmapping, pre-reading, SQ3R, skimming and scanning, eye span exercises, questioning, recall, summarising
- thinking strategies: awareness, intuition, selecting, processing, linking, evaluating, lication
- listening/speaking strategies: active listening, body language, tone, words, questioning for understanding, open and closed questions, voicing opinions
- writing strategies: understanding the question, identifying the purpose, key words, planning, brainstorming, editing strategies
