Prescription
This module aims to develop knowledge about the provision of various early childhood education programmes through reflective experience in an early childhood setting, licensed and chartered by the Ministry of Education different from the one in which the student's Field-Based Practice is undertaken. It aims to develop skills in implementing effective teaching strategies and techniques in a variety of early childhood settings. During the Practicum the student will be guided by a Wintec approved and paid Associate Teacher.

Learning and Teaching Resource
Academic staff with relevant qualifications, knowledge and skills in early childhood education
1x Lecturer visit three hours per student, includes a three way meeting with the Associate Teacher
On-line component where Associate Teachers provide feedback on students' progress (monitored by the visiting lecturers)
Wintec approved Associate Teacher
Agreement with Practicum Placement to support student with their study commitments

Relevant required and recommended readings and resources will be updated annually prior to delivery of the module to ensure currency of the literature and resources. The annual required and recommended reading list will be provided to the students in Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) annual Booklist and Student Module Booklet.
Learning Outcomes
1.Identify similarities and differences between the student's Field-Based Practice setting and Practicum setting, including the role of the early childhood education teacher, using reflective practice.
2.Demonstrate reflective practice techniques which enable them to engage with children, identify learning experiences and reflect on, evaluate and learn about their own teaching practice with the Associate Teacher and Visiting Lecturer.
3.Show commitment to developing warm relationships with the children and adults within the Practicum setting and describe the role of the early childhood education teacher.
4.Show an introductory understanding in practice of Tikanga Maori and show the use of te reo Maori at an introductory level.
Assessment Criteria
Assessment in this module is mixed mode, including competency and achievement based. The practical assessment is competency based. Students must attain the required standard in this assessment to pass the module. The remaining assessment is achievement based. All assessments must be completed, and submitted for assessment. To attain a passing grade for this module students must pass the practical competency based assessment and attain a minimum of 50 across the achievement based assessment.
Content
Practicum in a setting other than the students own Field-Based Practice setting, collaborative practice with an approved Associate Teacher and teaching team, comparative analysis between the students own Field-Based Practice setting and the Practicum environment, relationship development in a teaching setting different to the students own Field-Based Practice setting, reflective practice, the planning, teaching and assessing model, teaching techniques and strategies - (selection and application of basic techniques suitable to the environment), use of te reo Maori me nga tikanga-a-iwi (at an introductory level appropriate to the early childhood education environment, development of basic critical thinking skills, relevant literature to support practice, participation in Communities of Learners, introduction to equity, diversity, biculturalism and multiculturalism, using child observations for evidence based practice, basic concepts of positive guidance and professional ethics.

Students are in Practicum placement, selected, approved and arranged by Wintec for 30 hours per week for three consecutive weeks, supervised by an approved and paid Associate Teacher
