Prescription
While learning a foreign language in ESTE601: Language Learning Experience (which must be taken concurrently) focus is on the student as an individual language learner. The student will reflect on a range of factors involved in both learning and teaching a language, such as creating a positive teaching and learning environment, teaching techniques, motivation, affective factors, learning styles and learning strategies.

- 1. Identify and describe factors involved in creating a positive teaching and learning environment
2. Describe factors involved in your motivation for learning the language and identify ways in which the teacher affects your motivation.
3. Identify and describe your preferred learning style and evaluate strategies you use in learning the language.
4. Describe the way in which affective factors, such as tiredness, nervousness, anxiety and boredom, influence your learning.
5. Monitor your awareness of errors and describe your response to these.
6. Identify and describe your response towards a range of language teaching techniques and activities.
7. Compare features of the target language with those of English and describe the way in which this impacts learning and teaching.
8. Compare education systems in a country of your choice with education in New Zealand: focus on English language learning and describe ways in which educational approaches impact learning and teaching.

The assessment strategies of this module are compatible with the aim of the programme, which is to develop ‘reflective practitioners’ who are able to apply theoretical and experiential knowledge to practical teaching and learning situations.
Assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning processes with a focus on ‘assessment for learning’ where you will gain knowledge and skills through completing the assessment tasks themselves. A feature of the assessment is that you will receive clear feedback for work submitted throughout the module to help you improve the standard of your work for the final assessment.
