1. Identify and explain the development of management theories and examine the contribution of managers to productivity and effectiveness:
- Discuss the historical and modern approaches to environment in an organisational management.
- Identify the purposes of business organisations.
- Discuss and evaluate the impact of environmental factors affecting organisations.
- Outline the management process.
- Identify the competencies required of managers.
- Define the nature of ethics and social responsibility and the implications thereof for all stakeholders.

2. Discuss the nature and implications of organisational culture, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, and the management of change in the workplace.

3.Discuss, within the business environment, the nature, purpose and application of:
Planning:
- Explain the different types of planning carried out within an organisation
- Describe and demonstrate the planning process
Organising
- Describe the different types of organisational structures and their relevance to differing organisational contexts.
- Examine workplace and environmental trends that influence organisational structures
- Explain organisational design as it relates to current business context
- Examine cultural dimensions and other environmental factors influencing organisational design
Leadership and Motivation:
- Describe the nature of leadership and vision
- Examine major theories of leadership
- Describe the bases and role of power in relation to leadership
- Examine major theories of motivation and their application in the workplace
- Explain the relationship between motivation and performance
Control
- Describe the nature and role of control
- Explain the control process
- Evaluate alternative methods of control

4. Describe key competencies contributing to management effectiveness
- Time management
- Conflict resolution
- Managing stress
- Negotiation skills

5. Discuss the importance and contribution of groups and teams to effective business performance.
- Examine the nature of group dynamics and teamwork within an organisation
- Explain the team building process
- Explore the factors influencing group dynamics and effectiveness
- Describe the characteristics of high performance teams and their contribution to competitive advantage
- Demonstrate the ability to work as an effective team member

6. Identify and apply different approaches to problem solving and decision making.

7. Discuss current topical issues and trends impacting on organisations in New Zealand. These may include:
- Discuss the nature and impact of multiculturalism/diversity in the workplace
- Discuss the nature and impact of lifelong learning and learning organisations
Assessment Criteria
Candidates must achieve a minimum result of 40 in the final examination or nominated assessment/s of each module. They must also achieve a minimum C grade pass overall from all assessments to receive a passing grade for the module.

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Teaching will involve blended delivery methods incorporating theoretical and practical classes, face to face, lectures, tutorials, workshops, group activities, guest lecturers, field trips, role-play, video conferencing, and on-line delivery, as appropriate.
