Prescription
This module will introduce the student to the fundamentals of music theory. Emphasis will be given to developing skills in the areas of harmony, ear training and notation. In addition, students will use an analytical approach to modern and traditional musical ideas and then integrating these ideas in practical composition. Skills acquired in this module will be developed and applied in concurrent and successive modules.

2LEARNING OUTCOMES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
2.1Understand selected discourses and practices and their relevance to music
Produce written, comparisons and analyses of selected texts
Produce oral and written descriptions of self practice
Use conventional forms of writing to analyse texts

Test the use of selected methods in the production of works

2.2 Acquire an understanding of the language of music
Analyse and discuss a range of chord progressions using diatonic triads and four-note chords
Explore through composition note relationships within chord structures
Explore functional harmony through composition
Employ a range of standard chord progressions in the creation of music
Explore the construction of diatonic scales with reference to notes and intervals
Explore and test intervals as the foundation for melody and harmony
Consider the functional role of harmony in relation to melody and rhythm
Use non harmony notes in chords
Identify and practically apply dominant seventh chords in a range of musical contexts
Apply a knowledge of harmony in the creation of musical cadences
Explore and test modal systems
Explore the fundamental principles of voice leading and scale tone tendencies
Explore and test the principles of diatonic re-harmonisation

2.3 Develop a basis for the development of inner hearing and the practical application of music theory through ear training
Identify and perform reading examples of intervals, scales, and basic rhythmic patterns
Develop basic proficiency in sight reading music combining knowledge of notation and ear training skills
Demonstrate an aural process that breaks music down into its fundamental components of melody, rhythm, and harmony
Apply aural perception and notation skills to the transcription of recorded and performed music
Perform a variety of short melodies using knowledge gained
Comprehend the characteristics of specified triads in tonal contexts
Identify harmonic cadences using aural perception skills

Develop a vocabulary for discussing work

Simple time signatures
Solfege exercises based on major and natural minor scales.
Two part rhythms
Line rhythms
Melodic and rhythmic dictation.
Intervals, harmony and rhythm in performed and recorded examples.
Melodies and basslines using solfege syllables
