Prescription
The aim of this module is to provide students with the knowledge and skills required to understand the historical development of architecture and interior design from antiquity to the present day. This includes an understanding of the contextual influences of social history, including political movements, technological developments, philosophical beliefs and cultural aspects that have led to the evolutionary development of architecture and design styles and movements over the centuries.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will have the knowledge and skills required to:

1. Understand the history of art, architecture and design within the context of aesthetic, social, philosophical, technological and cultural changes and influences
- Complete self-directed research and reflect upon working processes
- Explain and discuss the history of art, architecture and design and the key historical periods within the context of aesthetic, social, philosophical, technological and cultural changes and influences

2. Describe and discuss the historical evolution of furniture, furnishings and fittings and their influence on the development of contemporary interior design
- Develop an integrated interior design solution for projects that combine spatial planning, selections of colours, materials and finishes appropriate to a chosen historical period and setting
- Plan, prepare and manage the structured resolution of a process through the generation, regeneration, manipulation and refinement of ideas

3. Apply historical interior design elements and styles in contemporary interior settings
- Explore concepts of space and shape in the development of three dimensional interior design concepts combining historically themed design elements integrated into contemporary interior settings

Assessment Criteria
To pass this module, students must pass all assessments and accumulate an overall mark of no less than 50.

1) Attendance requirements of the School of Media Arts must be observed.

Required Text:

An extended reading list will be supplied by the tutor at commencement of the course. This will be updated annually.

Teaching and Learning Strategy
- A range of lectures covering the topics, together with exercises and assignments and tests which draw upon the lecture material and which require the student to work with the material.

- A problem-based learning approach requiring investigation by the student, and backed up by lectures/tutorials.

- A studio environment where the course content is directly related to the content of other courses in integrated problem based projects.
