This module will extend and expand upon the knowledge and skills in interior design elements, principles and conventions students gained in BMID550 Interior Design Studies 1. This module will enable students to explore concepts of space and shape in the development of three-dimensional commercial interior design concepts.

2LEARNING OUTCOMES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
On successful completion of this module students will have the knowledge and skills required to:

2.1Use a process which advances the structured and reflective refinement of a design problem
-identify the problems and issues set in the course brief
-complete self-directed research and reflect upon working processes
-demonstrate the structured resolution of a process through the generation, regeneration, manipulation, and refinement of ideas
-discuss with peers and tutors the individual working process adopted
-show evidence of independent and interdependent processes for working

2.2Facilitate a specialist retail design project from initial client brief response through to conceptual design, developed design, documentation and implementation
-identify the problems and issues set out in the retail design project brief
-explore concepts of space and shape in the development of three dimensional retail interior design concepts
-apply and develop the skills to create a specific mood, atmosphere or theme required for a specialised retail design interior
-apply an understanding of shop fitting systems and the specialist requirements of retail joinery design

2.3Apply spatial planning and three dimensional conceptual problem solving to develop, analyse, edit and select appropriate design solutions for specific commercial office design projects
-identify the problems and issues set out in the commercial office design project brief
-analyse the concepts of function, circulation and traffic flow as they relate to commercial office interior projects
-analyse the interrelationships between selected spaces and adjacent activities in fully resolved space planned layouts for commercial office spaces

2.4Develop an integrated interior design solution for a hospitality interiors project that combines spatial planning, selections of colours, materials and finishes, lighting design and selections of furniture and soft furnishings
-identify the problems and issues set out in the hospitality design project brief
-explore the relationships between various textures, colours, materials, furniture and lighting in creating specialised, themed, bar/restaurant/cafe interior
-apply and develop the skills to create a specific mood, atmosphere or theme required for a specific interior space
-apply relevant sections of the New Zealand Building Code to a hospitality design project


2.5Apply skills and competency in working collaboratively in the design and execution/installation of an exhibition
-work individually and collaboratively to explore concepts of space and shape in the development of three-dimensional concepts for the design of the exhibition
-determine a specific goal, purpose and audience for the exhibition
-design, document, detail and cost the built items required in the exhibition
-work collaboratively in the construction/installation of the exhibition

2.6Apply the conventions of portfolio design and strategy in the development of self-promotional material
-determine a specific goal, purpose and audience for the portfolio
-use industry norms to assess work to be included in portfolio content
-use appropriate media strategies and conventions to design and present work in a professional portfolio

2.7 Comprehend the process of a graded assignment

Teaching and Learning Strategy
This module centres on a problem based learning approach requiring investigation by the student and supported by course content in lectures, tutorials, guest lecturer presentations and field trips.

The module is undertaken in a studio environment where the course content is directly related to the content of other courses in integrated problem based projects

Tutor/s will:
- Establish themes and issues for analysis and discussion
- Construct models for analysis and discussion of texts, visual works, precedent studies
- Prescribe structure for working through stages of a project
- Negotiate topic, workload, and the form of the presentation with students
- Prescribe exercises to develop drawn, written and oral presentation skills
- Facilitate student's progress through structured exercises and supervision of regular self-assessment

Students will:
- Participate in dialogue and identify relevant themes from lectures and readings
- Develop their understanding of issues explored in texts and visual works
- identify areas of interest that form the basis of an area of research, a design project or presentation
- Participate in collaborative critiques
- Grade assessment performed by peers, tutor(s) and guest critics
Assessment Criteria
To pass this module, students must pass all assessments and accumulate an overall mark of no less than 50.

Note:
1) Attendance requirements of the School of Media Arts must be observed.
2) If you wish to be assessed in Maori, please inform staff at the beginning
