Prescription
The aim of this module is to provide students with knowledge and skills required to understand basic materials and methods used in the building and construction industry that relate to residential interior projects. This will include an understanding of current building construction technologies, and the selection of appropriate materials and finishes and manufacturing techniques as used in current interior design projects

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will have the knowledge and skills required to:

1. Understand and describe contemporary building processes for small scale residential building types
- Understand the terminology of building materials and processes appropriate to regulatory and contractual requirements within New Zealand
- Develop a vocabulary of terminology as used in current industry building practice

2. Describe and explain the purposes of service systems as used in small scale residential buildings
- Acquire an understanding and show competency in design, planning and the selection of fittings appropriate for a range of interior projects
- Prepare scaled drawings, scaled models and full specifications (FFE) as required in industry practice for interior fit out projects


3. Explain the process for selecting materials and finishes appropriate to a range of interior environments
- Identify and apply knowledge of a variety of building materials, finishes and techniques
- Understand the unique compositions and attributes of materials and finishes in terms of their appropriate use in location
- Research, source and analyse a range of materials and finishes for use in the construction industry relevant to contemporary building issues

4. Describe and explain environmental and sustainable issues affecting interior design fit outs and the impact on users
- Research, source and select materials and finishes and understand the environmental impact of their consumption and resource
- Acquire an understanding of designing for Healthy homes including all aspects of the health, safety and well being of the occupants and users of the space

Teaching and Learning Strategy
Tutor/s will:
- Establish themes and issues for analysis and discussion
- Construct models for analysis and discussion of texts, visual works, precedent studies
- Prescribe structure for working through stages of a project
- Negotiate topic, workload, and the form of the presentation with students
- Prescribe exercises to develop drawn, written and oral presentation skills
- Facilitate student's progress through structured exercises and supervision of regular self-assessment

Students will:
- Participate in dialogue and identify relevant themes from lectures and readings
- Develop their understanding of issues explored in texts and visual works
- identify areas of interest that form the basis of an area of research, a design project or presentation
- Participate in collaborative critiques
- Grade assessment performed by peers, tutor(s) and guest critics
Assessment Criteria
To pass this module, students must pass all assessments and accumulate an overall mark of no less than 50.

1) Attendance requirements of the School of Media Arts must be observed.
