This unit standard is intended for people studying journalism in an off-job situation. People credited with this unit standard are able to: take, select, and process photographs for news assignments; and produce a slide show for the internet from news assignments in accordance with the publishable standard.

Outcome 1

Take, select, and process photographs for news assignments.

Range - Evidence is required for six photographs to illustrate the candidate's own news stories.

Evidence requirements

1.1 A variety of photographs are composed to meet editorial, legal, and ethical requirements.

1.2 Photographs are produced for a variety of situations and layouts.

Range - Head shots, group shots, wide shots, close-ups, verticals, horizontals.

1.3 Captions are written ensuring information is accurate and complete.

Range - Grammar, punctuation, spelling, explains graphic's content, names identifiable subjects, purpose of photograph, relation to news event.

1.4 Photographs are downloaded to a computer file using photo-processing software.

1.5 Photographs relevant to news stories, and of reproducible quality, are identified and a range of photographs is produced for final selection.

Range - May include but is not limited to - headshots, group shots, wide shots, close-ups, verticals, horizontals.

1.6 Photo-processing software is used to prepare photographs for publication.

Range - Cropping, sharpening, colour enhancement, contrast balance, light balance, red-eye removal, file size, labelling, security of storage.

Outcome 2

Produce a slide show for the internet from news assignments in accordance with the publishable standard.

Range - Evidence is required for a minimum of ten photographs.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Photographs are taken and a selection are processed and used to prepare a slide show with captions for internet publication.

Range - Dominant feature, sharp, clear features, well lit, photographs are relevant to story angle, size, quality, acceptable image file format.


2.2 Photographs are composed to meet editorial, legal, and ethical requirements.

2.3 Photographs are downloaded to a computer file, using photo-processing software, and assembled into a slide show.

Range - Cropping, sharpening, colour enhancement, contrast balance, light balance, red-eye removal, file size, labelling, security of storage.

2.4 Photographs are produced for a variety of situations and layouts.

Range - Head shots, group shots, wide shots, close-ups, verticals, horizontals.

2.5 Captions are written ensuring information is accurate and complete.

Range - Grammar, punctuation, spelling, explains graphic's content, names identifiable subjects, purpose of photograph, relation to news event.

2.6 Draft slide show presentation is reviewed in accordance with training establishment practices.

2.7 Slide show is corrected in accordance with the publishable standard and filed to meet training establishment practices.
