This core module aims to introduce the concept of "technology", the role of the technologist, and the contexts within which technology is applied with reference to contemporary and professional issues.It also includes key skills for the acquisition, evaluation, manipulation, and presentation of technology information that will later be applied in other modules in the BTech (endorsed) programme.

1. Define the term “Technology”, and describe the roles performed by “Technologists”2. Describe historical development and potential of technology3. Describe contexts within which technology is applied with reference to contemporary issues, professional issues, and technology application4. Acquire, evaluate, manipulate, analyse and present information from a range of sources
Content
Content may include but is not limited to:Introduction to technology- Definitions of 'Technology' and the relationships with 'Science- and -Engineering- - Technologists' roles in production, support, communication/education, technocratic, other. associated capabilities- Stages in technological evolution (generic and industry/technology specific). Principles and utilities of key tools, machines and automated equipment using industry/technology examples- High technology contribution and potential. Including electronics, computing, telecommunication, biotechnologyIntroduction to technology in context- Contemporary issues in technology- Energy, climate, NZ legislation, international agreements, food miles, social and cultural (including Maaori) perspectives, environmental, political- Professional issues- Legal issues, intellectual property, ethics, standards, codes of practice, safety and health regulations, treaty of Waitangi and resource management act- Technology application- Technology assessment, economic (e.g. payback period), technology transfer, appropriate technologies, cross disciplinary applicationsInformation management- Information-literacy skills- Indexes, encyclopaedias, databases, scholarly journals, library catalogues, websites, other. Searching concepts, searching tools, selecting and using information, source referencing- Generic software applications- Word processing, spreadsheet, CAD, database, statistics package, data acquisition software, commercial Excel -add-ins-
Teaching and Learning Strategy
Lectures and computer lab and studio based self-paced packages, lectures, problem solving sessions, tutorials, and other learning activities.Problem solving sessions will focus on applications directly related to the content of other modules in integrated problem-based projects.
Assessment Criteria
This is an achievement-based module in which students must gain an overall grade of 50% to pass.
