To consolidate and articulate a broad base of empirical, experiential, professional and contextual knowledge for the comprehensive and advanced clinical management of health consumers with long term and common or acute conditions and present evidence towards meeting the Nursing Council of New Zealand Competencies for the nurse practitioner scope of practice.

- 1. Define and clearly articulate safe, autonomous and accountable practice within the regulatory, legislative, professional and knowledge frameworks that govern advanced nursing practice and prescribing.
2. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of pathophysiology and pharmacology in health assessment and diagnostic decision-making skills, recognising the significance of epidemiological, and individual client contextual data, including current drug therapies.
3. Use rangahau or research evidence, advanced practice conceptual frameworks, and relevant technological solutions in planning appropriate and innovative therapeutic interventions with clients and families or whanau, including prescribing medications or appliances within scope of practice.
4. Critically appraise clinical trials and other evidence for practice, to evaluate therapeutic plans and manage responses to drug therapy including adverse drug reactions and interactions and/or appliances in collaboration with clients and families.
5. Demonstrate reflexive professional relationships with clients, families or whanau and other members of the interprofessional health team, to communicate effectively, consult, and work collaboratively with diverse communities.
6. Demonstrate values intrinsic to the nurse practitioner role and articulate strategies for critical reflection, self-monitoring, ongoing practice development, and mentorship for self and others. - Content
- • Conceptual and evidence bases for advanced nursing practice and the provision of health care services
• Role of the Nurse Practitioner with populations who have long term or common conditions
• Professional, ethical and legal responsibilities for advanced nursing practice
• Critical thinking and scholarship for advanced clinical reasoning and judgement
• Pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and the professional and contextual considerations for prescribing practice including management of adverse drug reactions and interactions.
• Client and whanau centred approaches to management of nursing care at the nurse practitioner level
• Leadership in advanced practice, and critique of health policy for specific populations and health outcomes
• Ongoing capability development and professional supervision - Assessment Criteria
- The portfolio is comprised of multiple components.
Students need to provide evidence against all learning outcomes, and gain an overall mark of 50% to pass this module. - Learning and Teaching Resource
