- Evaluate the range of common structural loadings and their effect on structures.
Calculate stresses caused by axial forces, shear forces and bending moments.
Analyse simple structural elements and structures
Determine the loads on, and design statically determinate steel and timber beams
Analyse simple foundations for structures
- Structural loadings and effects
Direct stress and strain, elastic behaviour and characteristics
Analysis of statically determinate beams, pin-jointed trusses, columns
Design simple steel and timber beam
Introduce (without calculation) the basic reasons for choosing a particular foundation type (range: pads, strips, rafts, piles)
Determine sizing for simple foundation elements (pads, strips) based on given soils data
