Students will develop the listening and speaking skills required to communicate independently and effectively in a wide range of familiar and unfamiliar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic contexts.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
LO1: Respond appropriately to an extended complex dialogue of an academic nature.
LO2: Participate effectively in extended spoken discourse in English for academic purposes.
Content
• Follow and engage in complex discussions with multiple participants on a range of academic topics
• Justify and develop ideas and opinions
• Respond to others’ opinions (e.g. expressing doubt or objections, offering counter-arguments, conceding)
• Identify and use a range of turn-taking and negotiating strategies and language (e.g. persuading, considering alternative views, paraphrasing, summarising)
• Lead a discussion (e.g. setting the agenda, managing time and participation of others, getting back on track, summarising and concluding)
• Apply critical thinking skills
• Use hedging/cautious language
• Use appropriate discourse markers
• Use a range of speech features to convey meaning (e.g. word and sentence stress, pausing, intonation)
Assessment Criteria
In order to pass a course, students must:
• Meet all course learning outcomes
• Pass all summative assessments
• Attend at least 85% of scheduled classes (on campus)
