Students will be introduced to the reading and writing skills required to communicate independently and effectively in a wide range of familiar and unfamiliar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic contexts.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
LO1: Interpret information from complex written texts on a familiar academic topic.
LO2: Write a well-structured, academic text using a range of sources.
Content
• Identify academic text genres, their organisation and purpose
• Apply a range of reading strategies and approaches
• Read extensive academic texts (e.g. research articles, book chapters)
• Take structured notes from written texts
• Write coherent, structured academic essays
• Search for sources on the library catalogue and databases
• Integrate research into written work (quoting, reporting, paraphrasing and summarising)
• Define and identify instances of plagiarism
• Use similarity checking software (e.g. Turnitin)
• Accurately use appropriate referencing and formatting style
• Apply critical thinking skills
• A range of specialised vocabulary relevant to the academic and/or professional field
• New General Service List, first 3000 words
• New Academic Word List

Assessment Criteria
In order to pass a course, students must:
• Meet all course learning outcomes
• Pass all summative assessments
• Attend at least 85% of scheduled classes (on campus)
