Students will develop the listening and speaking skills required to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility in academic settings.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
LO1: Respond appropriately to a moderately complex spoken exchange on familiar academic topics
LO2: Deliver an oral presentation in English for academic purposes
Content
• Follow dialogs or discussions with multiple participants on a range of academic topics
• Identify main ideas and relevant details of complex dialogs or discussions
• Identify key concepts and opinions
• Recognise the organisation/patterns of academic dialogues or discussions
• Take structured notes, use common abbreviations and summarise dialogues or discussions
• Respond to extended dialogues or discussions (e.g. opinion or summary)
• Use a range of presentation skills and language (e.g. rhetorical questions, pausing, signposting words and phrases, creating and using visuals)
• Use appropriate style and register and relevant conventions of spoken language
• Recognise and pronounce words and phrases in extended speech (e.g. stress, rhythm, pausing and linking of sounds)
• Develop coherence and use range of cohesive devices
Assessment Criteria
In order to pass a course, students must:
• Meet all course learning outcomes
• Pass all summative assessments
• Achieve all unit standards
• Attend at least 85% of scheduled classes (on campus)
